The Lourdes Fernández Memorial Fund
The Lourdes Fernández Memorial Fund honors our friend, the person who brought Somos Amigos to El Naranjito. Year after year, Lourdes welcomed hundreds of our volunteers into her home and fed them at her own table — turning strangers into friends, one meal at a time. She was a pillar of strength, a proud, loud, and persuasive voice for her people, first her family and then her whole community. Our work became her work; she shared our vision and dreamed with us of what our clinic could become.
On July 28, we broke ground on the first permanent, full-time home for that clinic — the year-round place Lourdes imagined. The Fund is part of our capital campaign, Opening New Doors, to build and sustain a clinic that will care for several thousand more of Lourdes' friends every year. A gift in her name carries her forward, into the clinic she made possible.
"She was a once-in-a-lifetime woman who assumed her leadership not for herself but for others — always with a smile formed by years of failing and not giving up. She changed the landscape of Naranjito and asked for nothing in return but courage, commitment, and the desire to serve more. Humble. Happy. Yet regal."
